The 2012 NCAA Bracket is a voluntary organization
which encompasses 1281 institutions and organizations.
Its main responsibility is the organizing of all the athletic
programs in most colleges and universities in USA and
Canada. The head quarters of this organization are in
Indianapolis, Indiana. The NCAA is divided into three
leagues, the division 1, division 2 and division 3. This was
decided on in a 1973 convention.

Large schools compete in division 1 while small
institutions compete in these other second and third
divisions. Scholarships are offered in first and second
divisions to those students and athletes who excel in
sports, but this is not common in third division schools.
This is a good idea as seeks to help needy kids and
develop their talent at the same time to their own
benefit.

Colleges that offer football as a sport were divided also
into divisions 1, 2 and 3, with the first division being sub
divided into the I A and the I AA in 1978. There was a
brief introduction of the I AAA division for first division
schools, but this was soon done away with and is no
longer referred to officially by the association. I A and I
AA were subsequently renamed the Football Bowl
Subdivisions and the Football Championship Subdivisions
respectively.

In the beginning, the organization did not offer any
women sports. There was an organization much like the
NCAA that governed sports that women played. This was
the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women.
This organization was however dissolved in 1982 and the
members in the AIAW became part of the association of
men.

In order to qualify for participation in college athletics in
their fresh man year, any individual student must be high
school graduates who have completed the minimum
academic courses required of them and they must also
have an above average grade point average score. This
score is spread across 16 academic credits.

In 2011, a decision was passed in which a student may
sign a letter of intent asserting his intention of entering
and playing in the college football league after the first
Wednesday of the month of February. In that same year,
the association raised the academic requirements of all
athletes competing in the post season competitions.

The 2012 NCAA Tournament Bracket has several rules
which were formulated to enforce the legislation of the
association. The rules were promulgated in 1952 after
considerations by the association. Going against these
rules may result in severe punishment for the athletes or
member school.
