Backyard Gardening Is Great!

Backyard gardening is great for many reasons. This article will focus on just three. Backyard
gardening is wonderful because it provides physical exercise tastes great and saves money. Don't be
anxious about growing food. Gardening is a fun and rewarding hobby, and this article will give you
some reasons to get started right away.

1. Get exercise in your garden.

Gardening will get your heart pumping just as fast as working out at a fitness center. Don't worry
about expensive tools. If you've got a shovel, a pair of work gloves, and a watering pail, then you can
turn your yard into an edible outdoor fitness center. Digging up and turning the dirt in even just a
small garden plot will get your muscles burning.

Weeds that spring up in the garden need to be removed regularly before they get out of control. You
can spend 10 or 20 minutes each day pulling weeds to get a brisk and refreshing cardiovascular
workout with results you'll be able to see. It is a good idea to weed at least once a week. The longer
you put it off, the longer it will take to clean the weeds out of the garden. Carrying water to your plants
is another great way to work your muscles.

2. Fresh crops taste better.

You will never taste a tomato that has better flavor than the one you nurtured and grew to maturity
yourself. That goes for every fruit, herb, and vegetable you raise. Herbs like basil, rosemary, thyme,
oregano, cilantro and sage are easy to care for and grow much more quickly than most vegetables. A
little sprinkle of home grown herbs will add a delicious burst of flavor to any food.

Vegetables like carrots taste sweeter and more flavorful than anything available at the supermarket.
Salad greens like lettuce or arugula will be ultra fresh, picked just before dinner, and taste more
tender. Once you savor the flavor of backyard produce it will be hard for you go back to the produce
at your grocer.

3. Gardening can save you money.

Farmers spend a lot of money in order to grow food for people all over the world, but you can have a
small scale garden that actually saves you money. You are already saving money on that gym
membership you didn't have to renew, and you can cut into your food bills by growing great tasting
additions to your regular menu.

If you preserve some of your harvest by canning or fermenting, you can reap the rewards of your
garden all year long. Don't feel pressured to spend money on tools and gadgets. If you keep your
eyes and ears open you can find free resources to help grow your garden.

Gardening is great for more than the three previous reasons. Gardening is a rewarding and relaxing
activity with a lot of fringe benefits. The hard work it takes to raise healthy plants will keep you fit and
active. The tasty harvests will add new depth of flavor to your food, and you can cut some of your
usual costs by appreciating your garden and spending free time caring for your crops.
