Pectic enzymes are implicated almost routinely as a feature of host-pathogen inter-
action. Their involvement in the degradation of pectic constituents of cell walls and of
the middle lamella in plant tissues has been reported for diverse types of pathogens and of
diseases63. Ability to produce pectic enzymes, however, does not always indicate that
the organism possesses pathogenic capabilities. It may be regarded that pectic enzymes
are just one of the complex factors involved in pathogenesis. In certain diseases they
