BAHA IMPLANT
A BAHA (Bone-Anchored Hearing Aid) is a type of hearing aid based on bone conduction. The BAHA
system utilizes the body's natural ability to conduct sound. Bone, like air, conducts sound vibrations. For
people with hearing loss, this provides another pathway to perceive sound.

Typical hearing aids rely on air conduction
and a functioning middle ear. In cases where
the middle ear function may be blocked,
damaged or occluded, the BAHA system may
be a better option as it bypasses the middle
ear altogether. Instead, sound is sent around
the damaged or problematic area, naturally
stimulating the cochlea through bone
conduction. Once the cochlea receives these
sound vibrations, the organ 'hears' in the same manner as through air conduction; the sound is
converted into neural signals and is transferred to the brain, allowing a BAHA recipient to perceive
sound.
BAHA is the preferred treatment for children and adults with conductive hearing loss, mixed hearing loss
or single-sided sensorineural deafness
The BAHA system consists of 3 parts.
1. A sound processor that picks up sound
vibrations.
2. An abutment is attached to the sound
processor and the implant. The abutment
transfers the sound vibrations from the
processor to the implant.
3. A small titanium implant is placed in the
bone behind the ear where it fuses with the
living bone. This process is called
osseointegration. The implant transfers the
sound vibrations to the functioning cochlea.
To benefit from the BAHA a person needs sufficient function in at least one cochlea. The only way to
know if a person can benefit is to have a thorough assessment by an audiologist and ENT team who
specializes in fitting the BAHA.
The Process
1. Assessing your hearing
A BAHA-qualified ENT surgeon and/or audiologist carry out the necessary tests to determine if you, or
your child, are a candidate for BAHA. This is the time you should ask to try BAHA and experience the
difference it can make to your life.
2. Receiving your implant
This is a relatively a minor procedure. Under either local or general anesthetic, your surgeon removes
some hair follicles behind your ear and places a BAHA titanium implant with an abutment.

be trialed before making the decision to
proceed with surgery. The sound
processor is connected to a test band, test
