Special Prosecutor’s Office Iceland Selects Clearwell Systems to Streamline E-
Discovery
Clearwell E-Discovery Platform helps Special Prosecutor’s Office lower cost, reduce risk, and gain greater
control of e-discovery investigations
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Apr. 13, 2011 — Clearwell Systems, Inc., a leader in intelligent e–discovery, today
announced that the Special Prosecutor’s Office (SPO) Iceland, a government agency that investigates
suspicions of criminal actions related to the collapse of Icelandic banks in the fall of 2008, has selected the
Clearwell E-Discovery Platform for digital investigations. By using Clearwell for pre-processing, processing and
analysis of electronically stored information, SPO is able to vastly reduce the time, resources and cost of e-
discovery investigations.
“We chose the Clearwell E-Discovery Platform because it answered our needs for a comprehensive, intuitive
and, above all, forensically sound approach to extracting relevant data,” said Eiríkur Rafnsson, detective
chief inspector at the Special Prosecutor’s Office. “Not only is the Clearwell E-Discovery Platform fast, it can
handle all relevant file formats, eliminating the need for multiple programs to handle the data. Accessing our
dataset of millions of documents within the same platform has considerably reduced the manpower needed
for digital investigations. In the more than six months that the Special Prosecutor’s Office has used the
product, investigations are more streamlined. We’ve increased efficiency, and are producing better results.”
The Clearwell E-Discovery Platform is an enterprise-class solution that was purpose-built for e-discovery.
Clearwell’s Pre-Processing Module summarizes overall data set characteristics and allows SPO to interactively
filter data by “NIST list” and several metadata properties, reducing downstream processing and review costs.
Clearwell’s Processing and Analysis Module provides several features such as Transparent Keyword Search,
Transparent Concept Search, discussion threads and people analytics, enabling SPO to significantly accelerate
early case assessment, defensibly eliminate irrelevant documents and false positives, and rapidly perform
first-pass review. In addition, the Clearwell E-Discovery Platform automatically tracks all actions throughout
the e-discovery workflow, enabling robust end-to-end reporting and analytics and ensuring a defensible e-
discovery process.
As part of a best practices deployment strategy, SPO’s Clearwell administrator attended Clearwell University
training courses to advance and maximize the agency’s knowledge and use of the Clearwell E-Discovery
Platform. In on-site training conducted using SPO’s own dataset, the agency was able to immediately discover
critical evidence relevant to the investigation at hand.
“Organizations worldwide are under pressure to control legal costs, which is becoming increasingly difficult to
do as electronic data growth continues to accelerate,” said Jason Montgomery, director of sales, western
Europe, at Clearwell Systems. “To cope with these dual pressures, government agencies, such as the Special
Prosecutor’s Office Iceland, are using Clearwell to gain greater control of the e-discovery process while
ensuring the defensibility of their investigative process. We are pleased that Clearwell can enable SPO to
realize significant return on investment and streamline their e-discovery investigations.”
